Spartans take home first place

The No. 23 MSU men’s golf team won its second tournament of the season Wednesday after the final round of the Adams Cup of Newport at the Newport National Golf Club in Newport, R.I.

This was the first outright tournament victory for the men, who tied with Xavier in the Wolverine Invitational, in Ann Arbor last weekend.

The Spartans came out of the Orchard Course with a final team score of 873 after the last round Wednesday, three strokes ahead of Texas A&M.

“It’s been an awesome back-to back performance by our team in two good golf tournaments,” head coach Mark Hankins said in a statement.

Senior John Koskinen led the team with a final score of 217 (74-73-70) and came in 10th overall. Junior Casey Lubahn shot a 218 (75-72-71) and tied for 12th place with senior All-American Eric Jorgensen (72-74-72).

Other key plays came from junior Ben Fox who finished 19th with a three-round score of 220 (75-76-69) and sophomore Andrew Ruthkoski, who had a surprisingly high first-round score but still rounded out with 229 (79-78-72).

The Spartans will return to action Oct. 21 for the Duke Golf Classic in Durham, N.C.
