A fire caused $250,000 damage to a family home on Ann Street east of Hagadorn Road on Saturday morning.A total of 26 East Lansing and Meridian Township firefighters responded to the call at 5:25 a.m.The family of four was evacuated, and it took firefighters 45 minutes to gain control of the blaze.Leo Allaire, an East Lansing Fire Department spokesman, said the family’s garage caught fire after a cigarette butt was discarded by a woodpile. Arson is not suspected.• A 32-year-old female student was assaulted by a 39-year-old female student in the parking lot of Spartan Village Elementary School on Friday night, MSU police Lt. Kelly Beck said. The victim attempted to get away from the suspect by getting back into her vehicle but was unable to close the door, Beck said. The suspect proceeded to reach into the victim’s car and choke her, only to stop when someone threatened to call police. The case is going to the prosecutor’s office for review, Beck said.• A university-owned vehicle was reported stolen Friday, Beck said. The Physical Plant Division’s department of Transportation Services is looking for a 1999 Dodge Stratus valued at $6,200, Beck said. Residence Life returned the vehicle last winter, and it is unknown where it is now, Beck said. There are no suspects.
