Alabama, Moonlight good movie choices

September 27, 2002

Cinderella arrives in the 21st century when Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon), a girl from the backwoods of Alabama, finds herself in the New York spotlight.

But Melanie can’t marry New York’s most eligible bachelor without divorcing the man she married in high school.

Wedding plans are put aside as she and her future in-laws travel back to Alabama to get closure.

A lot of pressure lies on the shoulders of the production team for the film.

While it won’t make or break anybody’s career, the title alone mustn’t come up short. Attaching bad films to a classic Lynyrd Skynyrd song is a bad idea.

The film opens today at AMC Meridian Outer 6 Theatres, 1999 Central Park Drive in Okemos, and Celebration Cinema, 200 E. Edgewood Blvd. in Lansing.

But if you are going to be in the Detroit area this weekend, you might be in luck. “Moonlight Mile” stars Jake Gyllenhaal, opposite Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon, as a young man whose life is changed by the loss of his fiancée.

Gyllenhaal is making a name for himself with films like “The Good Girl” and “Donnie Darko.” Unfortunately, his wicked talent can only be seen in select, larger markets.
