Spartan soccer starts strong

The men’s and women’s soccer teams finished a combined 2-0-1 over the weekend.

The No. 22 MSU men’s soccer team defeated No. 4 Virginia 4-3 and Kentucky 3-1 at the IPFW Soccer Showcase in Fort Wayne, Ind., over the weekend.

The Spartans scored four straight goals in the first half. Sophomore Jordan Gruber led the scoring with two unassisted goals.

The men’s team begins its regular season Sept. 1 at home against Wright State.

The MSU women’s soccer exhibition at Western Michigan was called after regulation due to rain, ending in a scoreless tie.

Junior Stacy Heller made one save in the first half, while sophomore Erin Carlson held the Broncos scoreless during the second half.

The women begin their season Sept. 1 at Bowling Green.
