Police briefs 08/07/02

A discarded cigarette caused a fire inside a trash can in Owen Graduate Hall on Monday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.A man noticed the smoke from the trash can and extinguished the fire. No injuries or damage occurred and police have no suspects.• A male employee reported seven laptops stolen from a Hubbard Hall office on Monday, McGlothian-Taylor said. The computers, valued at $7,000 total, were in a locked room. Entry was gained into the room via broken windows. Police have no suspects.• A woman reported a cell phone stolen from her room in Holmes Hall on Monday, McGlothian-Taylor said. She left the phone and its charger, valued at $100, on her desk unattended. When she returned a few hours later, it was gone. McGlothian-Taylor said the woman’s suitemate may have left her door unlocked. Police have no suspects.• A visiting female teacher reported her cell phone stolen from her locked office in Holmes Hall on Monday, McGlothian-Taylor said. The woman left her phone unattended on her desk and when she returned a few hours later, the phone, valued at $75, was missing. There were no signs of forced entry and police have no suspects.• A female employee reported her cell phone stolen from Bryan Hall on Monday, McGlothian-Taylor said. She left her phone, valued at $50, unattended in her backpack near an elevator for several hours. When she returned, the bag had been opened and the cell phone was gone. Police have no suspects.
