Alleged shooter to face hearing

July 1, 2002

A 24-year-old man arrested in connection with the shooting of a 22-year-old Lansing resident while in East Lansing awaits his preliminary hearing at the Ingham County Jail.

A hearing will be held at 54-B District Court, 101 Linden St., to determine if there is enough evidence to take Levar Darnell Shannon, the alleged shooter, to trial.

“There will be enough in this case,” East Lansing police Sgt. Mark VandeWouwer said.

Ivan Jackson was shot while visiting a friend on Wednesday night.

East Lansing police Capt. Juli Liebler said Shannon entered the East Lansing residence with a key he had stolen. Police say Jackson, who was shot once in the chest, had apparently owed money to Shannon.

Shannon was arraigned Thursday for assault with the intent to murder, a felony firearm violation, carrying a concealed weapon and home invasion. Bond was set for $500,000.

Jackson was treated at Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital. He is expected to recover, VandeWouwer said.
