Terek ready for nationals

May 23, 2002

For the second consecutive season, senior Paul Terek captured the title of Big Ten Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

At last week’s Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Madison, Wis., Terek also was honored as Athlete of the Championship, earning first place in the pole vault and decathlon events.

Terek’s 7,829 points in the decathlon shattered his own league record of 7,695.

“It’s a nice ending to the season, it feels great,” Terek said. “But I’m trying to stay focused on nationals.

“If I go there and it’s hot and there’s really great competition, I think I’ll have an outstanding week.”

Terek qualified to compete in the pole vault and decathlon for the NCAA Outdoor Championships May 29-June 1 in Baton Rouge, La.
