ONLINE UPDATE: Lugnuts best Battlecats in home series

May 9, 2002

Lansing - The Lugnuts got back on track after a rough road trip, as they closed up a brief four-game homestand with a 6-1 win over the Michigan Battlecats.

The Lugnuts (16-17) took three of four games over the Battlecats (20-14), owners of the best record in the East Division of the Midwest League.

Before returning to Oldsmobile Park, the Lugnuts sputtered to win four of the previous 12.

Lansing struck first Thursday, scoring left fielder and leadoff man Buck Coats in the first inning. And while starter Adam Wynegar held Michigan scoreless, Lansing added some insurance runs.

Wynegar improved his record to 2-1. Steve Ellis earned his fourth save.

Third basemen Corey Slavik took Battlecats’ starter Monte Mansfield deep over the fences for a two-run home run, his second on the year.

The Lugnuts added two more runs, both unearned after an error, in the bottom of the fourth.

But after Wynegar exited the game in the fifth, the Battlecats staged a comeback in the top half of the seventh. A two-out single with the bases loaded started a three-run frame.

Joshua Artega legged out a triple in the bottom of the eighth, and a single by catcher Lukas McKnight added an insurance run.

The Lugnuts head back on the road for a four-game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers before returning to Oldsmobile Park on May 15 for a series with South Bend.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre (1-3, 3.49 ERA) will try for the win in the series opener with Wisconsin on Friday.
