Groovatron to play at Harpers

Nick Ferrer doesn’t look at any gig he performs with his band, Groovatron, as too small or minuscule.

“If two people come out to a show, that’s two more people we have with us that have heard our music,” the guitarist and vocalist said. “Those two turn into four, and they tell their friends, and they tell their friends, and that goes on.

“Regardless of turnout, we play our best at each gig, and that’s the mentality all musicians should have - I don’t think all of them necessarily do.”

Groovatron will perform Saturday at Harper’s Restaurant and Brewpub, 131 Albert Ave.

Ferrer said when people watch the band and see that it is having such a great time, it rubs off on the audience.

“We’re really high energy,” he said. “We really focus on making a live show an actual show, and we have a nice lighting rig.

“We’re going to go all out and put on a really good show since it will be our first time through (East Lansing).”

The band has been classified as a jam band by some critics, but Ferrer said the band doesn’t draw all of its influences from that one genre.

“We listen to a lot of different pop music and even good hip-hop like A Tribe Called Quest or the Black Eyed Peas,” he said. “With six members with different influences, it’s a great thing for us and it gives us musical variation.”

The band has primarily played at coffeeshops, Chicago and the surrounding area in the past, but is trying to branch out so it won’t end up overkilling its reputation in one city.

“It’s a good reason for us to venture out into Michigan,” he said. “We really just started touring and are going to the southeast in September and October for about two months.”

The band also is itching to get back into the studio and hopes to record some new material by November.

“We just need to get the money,” he said. “There are so many other costs to take into consideration with touring - it eats a lot of our money.”

Cover is $3 for those 21 and over. The show starts at 10:00 p.m. Saturday For more information, call Harper’s at 333-4040.
