Wrestlers place eighth

The wrestling team (5-12, 2-6) finished eighth with 54.5 points in the 2002 Big Ten Wrestling Championships hosted by Illinois.

The Spartans were led by juniors Rashad Evans and Gray Maynard, who each placed fourth. Senior Chris Williams became the 12th MSU wrestler to win 100 career matches, defeating Greg Schaefer of Indiana.

Karl Nadolsky, John Wechter, Williams, Evans and Maynard will advance to the NCAA Championships March 21-23 in Albany, N.Y.

Baseball keeps rolling

The baseball team (9-2) completed a three-game sweep of Charleston Southern (3-17) with a 16-5 drubbing of the Buccaneers on Saturday. MSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third while sending 11 batters to the plate. During the series, the Spartans scored 39 runs, which tripled the scoring output of the Bucs. The team finished its spring trip with a 7-1 record.

Softball team drops five

The softball team (7-13) fell to Florida International 7-2 in the Spartans’ last game of the Speedline Invitational on Saturday. The team finished 0-5 in the tournament.

Gymnasts win again

The gymnastics team (14-4) won its fifth straight, defeating George Washington 195.350 to 194.650 Saturday in Washington, D.C. Freshman Kristin Merritt had the best overall score for the Spartans with a 38.850. Junior Julie Devaty posted the top score of the day on the balance beam with a 9.900. Junior Christy Linder tied for first place on the vault with a score of 9.850. The victory gave head coach Kathie Klages her 200th career victory and marked the fourth consecutive outing the team eclipsed the 195-point mark.

Golf team takes second

The women’s golf team holds on to the No.12 spot in the Sagarin/Golfweek.com’s latest poll. The Spartans finished second at the Verizon “Mo” Morial Invitational on Tuesday in Bryan, Texas. Senior Emily Bastel improved to No. 20 in the individual rankings.
