Senior Carly Weiden qualified for the NCAA Championships in the three-meter dive during the NCAA Diving Regionals, Zone C, in West Lafayette, Ind.
Weiden qualified on the second day of competition with a fifth-place finish.
She will make the trip to the 2002 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Austin, Texas, Thursday through Saturday, to compete in the 1- and 3-meter boards.
Junior Stephanie Anisko and freshman Kelly Baldwin also competed during the weekend, but did not qualify. Anisko and Baldwin finished 27th and 40th, respectively.
Softball splits games
The softball team wrapped up the Winthrop Invitational with a 2-2 record.
In day one, MSU (9-15) lost game one to Tulsa, 10-5, but came back to beat Providence, 3-0.
Senior pitcher Becky Gray struck out nine in her four-hit shutout performance against Providence. Grays record improved to 4-7.
In day two, MSU beat St. Peters 5-1 in game one before losing to Winthrop, 3-2, in eight innings.
The team returns to action Friday in the Buzz Classic in Atlanta.
Golfers finish fifth
The mens golf team finished fifth out of 14 teams at the Conrad Rehling Alabama Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
After opening rounds of 294 and 288, the Spartans capped off the tournament with a team score of 582, two under par for the round.
Sophomore J.J. Beckstrom led MSU with a score of 138, one under par for the tournament.
Gymnasts close season
The gymnastics team ended the regular season with a third-place finish at the Shanico Inn-vitational in Corvallis, Ore.
Michigan won the competition, followed by Oregon State. Seattle Pacific rounded out the field at fourth.
Junior Christy Linder had the teams highest finish, tying for second on the vault with a 9.900. Linders performance on the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise gave her a fourth-place finish in the all-around.
The Spartans will compete Saturday at the 2002 Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
Mix results for tennis
The mens tennis team collected two more wins during the weekend, while the womens team lost Sunday.
The mens team (11-5) defeated Bowling Green 5-2 and Bradley 7-0 on Saturday at the Indoor Tennis Facility.
The womens team fell 4-3 against Wisconsin.
