Id rather swallow shards of broken glass than listen to some wannabe Prince fan cover his songs.
An occasional cover of a great song is a treat, but to make an entire record of cover songs of the same artist is nothing more than a weak attempt at chomping into the wallets of the suckered die-hard fans.
Some could offer that these types of albums work because they showcase different interpretations of artists songs, but thats not necessarily a good thing - especially if many of the tracks already are amazing in their original form.
The rhythms and effects sound vaguely similar to Princes hits, but it doesnt make up for the overall poor renditions.
The background noises on Op:l Bastards cover of If I Was Your Girlfriend is strikingly similar to something a 2-year-old would play, with each note on the keyboard plunked with no recognizable pattern. The only thing keeping it together is a boring and nauseating electronic bass drum.
The contributions by Simian (Under the Cherry Moon) and Hefner (Controversy) are solid, but are too weighed down by the rest of the album.
The Most Beautiful Girl In the World, performed by Bronze Age Fox, doesnt work at all. Its soft and sweet, just like the original, but unlike cotton candy that melts in the mouth, this remake leaves nothing but a nasty taste.
Attempting to do songs by one-of-a-kind artists is a feat many have tackled, but like this album, havent quite nailed it yet.
