JCPenney at Meridian Mall, 1982 W. Grand River Ave., had about $1,000 in fire damage after a small fire Sunday night, Meridian Township fire Capt. Paul Messing said. The fire started in a wastebasket with extensive smoke and water damage causing an unknown amount of additional damage. There were 13 firefighters on the scene for more than three hours. The fire is still under investigation. A male student reported more than $1,600 in items stolen from his vehicle, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The students 1997 Jeep was parked in Lot 89, on Farm Lane and Mount Hope Road. The drivers side window was broken into, causing $400 in damage. Stereo speakers, the stereo system and amplifiers were stolen. Police have no suspects. A male student reported his backpack and contents stolen from IM Sports-Circle Friday, McGlothian-Taylor said. The student put his bag, which contained his pants, a cell phone and wallet on a bleacher while he was playing basketball. When he returned the items, valued at $250 were gone. Police have no suspects. A male student reported his wallet stolen from his Akers Hall room, McGlothian-Taylor said. The wallet and its contents, valued at $350, were sitting on his dresser. Police have no suspects. A 20-year-old nonuniversity male reported his guitar stolen from Akers Hall, McGlothian-Taylor said. The man was visiting a friend and left the guitar, worth $900, in an unoccupied open room. Police have no suspects. A male student reported damage to a sink in the mens bathroom, McGlothian-Taylor said. The student was in his Campbell Hall room when he heard a loud noise, when he went to investigate he found the ceramic sink on the floor and water leaking from the pipes. Damage is estimated at $300 and police have no suspects.Shannon Murphy
