Man arraigned in hacking case

February 22, 2002

A former computer network administrator for the East Lansing School District was arraigned Thursday on two counts of computer hacking.

Jason Sharp, who resigned from the district in July, is charged with breaking into the school district’s computer system in October from his home.

Damage to the system was estimated at $18,000 and much of it was down for more than two months, Superintendent Thomas Giblin said.

“We lost everything,” he said. “All of our storage, all of our files.

“He knew the system well, he built it.”

Sharp did not return telephone calls Thursday.

Judge Richard Ball released him on $5,000 personal recognizance bond, with conditions.

“He cannot make any contact, electronic or direct, with any person involved with the East Lansing schools and he cannot go on their property,” Ball said.

A preliminary examination is set for March 4, when Ball will determine if there is probable cause that Sharp committed the crime. If that is determined then the case will go to Ingham County Circuit Court.
