The Latin Explosion talent show and the From Slavery to Freedom Lecture Series will offer students an opportunity to learn during Februarys Chicano and Black History month.
Other large events during the month include the Dia de La Mujer Conference and a presentation by award-winning poet Nikki Giovanni.
Rodney Patterson, coordinator for the Office of Racial and Ethnic Student Affairs, said he thinks celebrating Black History Month was designed to raise awareness about black culture.
It showcases the accomplishments of African Americans, he said. I think its so important to do that because so much of what we learn reflects the accomplishments of European Americans and negates the accomplishments of African Americans.
And Patterson said the events will provide insight for people who attend.
I think there is a litany of really strong influential opportunities that can really impact and transform lives, he said.
Misty Staunton, co-chairwoman of Culturas de las Razas Unidas, said Chicana History Month allows for a period of reflection.
I think its important because it gives us a time frame to show our culture and history for those who dont know about it, the pre-med senior said. It lets us remember our roots and where we came from.
