This weekend, everyone in town has the chance to use the word “rotoscoping” in a conversation. That’s because you can say it when you talk about “Waking Life,” which is being shown at Wells Hall starting today and running through Sunday.

“Waking Life” is one of the movies director Richard Linklater released last year, the other being the Lansing-based “Tape.”

In “Waking Life,” Linklater uses the rotoscoping technique to add a dreamy animated style to his original shots. The scenes were then tailored by animators for a more ethereal look than the average film. Linklater completed the film on a budget of $100,000 - a figure much smaller than the average film. The movie follows an unnamed lead character played by Wiley Wiggins as he journeys through what may or may not be a dream, exploring and interacting with the various people he meets.

Notable cameos include Ethan Hawke, a veteran of Linklater’s work, as well as Julie Delpy and Timothy Levitch.

“Waking Life” will be shown at Wells Hall today, Saturday and Sunday at 7 and 9:15 p.m. Admission is $2 for students with valid ID and $5 for general admission.
