Coach leaves for Panthers

February 14, 2002

After one year, MSU’s linebackers and special teams coach has decided to move on to the next level.

Spartan head coach Bobby Williams announced Wednesday that Sal Sunseri has resigned. Sunseri accepted a position as quality-control coach for the Carolina Panthers in the NFL.

Sunseri was linebackers and special teams coach at Louisiana State before coming to MSU.

Sunseri and first-year Panthers head coach John Fox worked together as assistants at Pittsburgh.

“I’ve always had aspirations to coach in the NFL,” Sunseri said in a prepared statement. “Having an opportunity to coach with John Fox at Carolina was one opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

Sunseri said he will always remember his time at MSU and will remain a big fan.

Williams said in a written statement that a national search for Sunseri’s replacement will begin immediately.
