Fine arts professor displays Cuban book info at Kresge

January 25, 2002

After opening an exhibit in Havana and returning back to the United States, Anne Gilman will appear at Kresge Art Museum to present her book art at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Gilman is an adjunct associate professor of visual arts at Purchase College of the State University of New York and an adjunct assistant professor for the department of fine arts at Pratt Institute.

Gilman’s book, “Frayed Edges,” is part of the exhibition at the museum, titled “Wrapped Words: Handmade Books from Cuba’s Ediciones Vigia.” Her books usually are bilingual, with Spanish on one side and English on the other.

Susan Bandes, director of the museum, said Gilman will be discussing her book and bringing slides of her other work to the presentation. Bandes said Gilman’s book is unusual and interesting.

“She writes the books and she designs them,” Bandes said. “Some of the pages are purely visual. The way she places words on a page is also very important.”
