New music faculty performs tonight

The MSU School of Music presents a faculty recital featuring oboe Professor Jan Eberle on the oboe, along with veteran Professor of piano Ralph Votapek, both assisted by Robert Dan, on viola.

The concert is an annual event and a chance for new faculty, in this case Eberle, to share their talent.

The recital will be held at 7:30 p.m. today, in the Music Building Auditorium.

Eberle, who taught at the University of South Florida and the University of Akron, holds a bachelor’s degree in oboe performance and a Certificate of Special Study from the Curtis Institute of Music.

Votapek, who’s been part of the faculty for 34 years, said he’s excited to perform with Eberle in the first faculty recital featuring her.

“I’m really looking forward to the both of us playing together,” Votapek said. “She’s come to us from the Fort Worth Symphony and that’s great.”

Votapek, an international performer and recording artist, said the oboe is a very important part of the orchestra.

He has played with orchestras in the United States such as the New York, Chicago and Los Angeles philharmonics. Votapek also is well known for his Latin-American tours and Russian solo recitals.

“The people in South America seem to love my shows. They always want me to come back, and I go,” Votapek said. “I also get very good reception from Russia.”

Votapek earned an M.A. from the Manhattan School of Music and has performed for 40 years.

Admission for students is free; tickets for adults are $7; and tickets are $5 for senior citizens. All tickets can be purchased by calling the MSU School of Music at (517)353-5340.

Violinist to play at a later date

Violinist Dmitri Berlinsky’s Feb. 5 performance at the Music Building Auditorium has been moved due to scheduling conflicts. He will now perform at 3 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Music Building Auditorium.

“He’s performed a few times in the past,” said Jill McMillan, the school’s spokesperson. “People might not know of him because he’s so new, but we’re trying to get him a lot of concerts.

“He’s a world-renown violinist.”

Berlinsky is an artist teacher and assistant professor of violin at the School of Music.

Originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, Berlinsky came to the United States in 1990 as winner of the renowned Young Concert Artists International Auditions. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Moscow Conservatory, and a performer’s certificate from The Juilliard School.

There also has been a schedule change on Feb. 15. Originally, Paul Barsom, a professor of theory and composition at Pennsylvania State University, was slated to perform. Instead, the Wind Symphony and Concert Band will perform at 8 p.m. on that date in Wharton Center’s Great Hall.

It will feature guest composer Frank Ticheli directing some of his music, including “An American Elegy,” “Shenandoah,” “Vesuvius,” “Sundance” and “Portrait of a Clown.”
