Indian festival celebrated this weekend

Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, will be celebrated with traditional Indian drinking, dining and dancing at the Graduate Employees Union office Saturday.

Diwali Daze 2001 will offer snacks from Sindhu Indian Cuisine, 4790 S. Hagadorn Road, and music from Paulus Hook, a disc jockey from New York City.

The event is being presented by the MSU India Club and the Graduate Employees Union and is for people 21 and older.

Doors open at 9 p.m. and there is a $5 cover fee.

There will be no alcoholic beverages supplied at the celebration are welcome to bring their own.

Shruti Tewari, spokeswoman for the GEU, said Diwali is a very significant holiday in India and signifies the renewal of life.

“It’s a great chance to give non-Indians a peek into Indian culture,” she said. “We wanted to share this with the rest of the MSU community.”

Diwali Daze is the after-party for Diwali Night, a cultural show being held in the Kellogg Center auditorium. The cost of the event is $2 and begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Siddharth Ananthakrishnan, member of the GEU and former treasurer of the MSU India Club, said he hopes everything goes well at the party.

“It will be great,” he said. “I love to have a multicultural group together, it will be a nice, happening party.”
