College station to hold festival

November 5, 2001

One of the favorite television stations on many college campuses is coming to MSU, along with a handful of comedians and funny short films.

The Burly Bear Network is bringing its comedy festival to a number of colleges this semester, and at 8 p.m. tonight it will land at the Erickson Kiva.

“Burly Bear loves this campus,” said Jonathan Healey, the producer of the festival. “It’s a great school.”

The show features a variety of comedians and films throughout its expected 25-date run, covering the nation.

“Reaction has been great,” Healey said, noting a recent performance that featured Horatio Sanz of Saturday Night Live. “Our shows are big and the students love it. The comedy festival is an extension of Burly Bear.”

In between comics, the show will feature a number of short films, some of which can only be seen at the Burly Bear festival.

Some of these include “George Lucas in Love,” an independent short favorite and “Multiplex,” a humorous look at sneaking into multiple movies at the local cinema.

The festival looks at a large number of candidates for all the featured entertainment before heading out each year.

“Burly Bear is dedicated to breaking out the freshest new talent,” said Howard Handler, chief executive officer of the Burly Bear Network, in a written statement.

Other films that made their debut in the festival have been Chris Rock’s 1999 video “No Sex (in the Champagne Room)” and director Spike Jonze’s short film “How They Get There.”

The Burly Bear Network is a programming company created for the 18-24 year old age group. Most viewers will recognize it from the channel they discover when they first move into any dorm in about 420 universities nationwide, reaching nearly 3.3 million viewers.

The Burly Bear Comedy Festival will begin at 8 tonight at the Erickson Kiva in Erickson Hall. Admission is free.
