Bellyfruit, a play about unplanned pregnancies, kicked off BoarsHead Theaters Dark Night series Monday evening and ends at 7 tonight with a free performance.
Put on by BoarsHeads four interns and director K. Jason Bryan, the play is intended for young audiences, but not too young.
I think its relevant for high school and college-age women and men, said Carrie J. Noesen, who plays Christina.
The script has major parts for three women, played by Noesen, April Kersey and Che Pompey. Daryl Thompson picks up all the male roles such as boyfriends, fathers and such.
Bellyfruit is mostly monologue directed to the audience, but there is also interaction between characters.
The play is about three young women - teenagers who are dealing with unplanned pregnancies, Bryan said.
The BoarsHead interns thought a play about young peoples issues was important.
The subject is approached in an honest way thats not done enough, Bryan said.
Noesen emphasized the hardships of motherhood and emotional challenges involved with pregnancy.
Its a process of self-discovery, of learning more about themselves, she said.
Each of the interns has been involved with the regular season plays at BoarsHead Theater and their experience draws from a wide range of community, university and professional theater.
Tonights show is at 7 at BoarsHead Theater, 425 Grand Ave., in Lansing. Admission is free.
