Bleachmobile disappoints on latest

November 21, 2001

Americans love Japanese culture. From anime to action figures, people stateside can’t help but import every little thing that comes out of the land of the rising sun.

And often, that fetish for the other culture goes both ways.

Just as things such as “Dragonball,” “Pokémon” and “Gundam Wing” have fused with our Saturday morning cartoons, American pop and rock music has merged with Japanese entertainment. English singing artists such as Ben Folds Five and Sloan inspire musicians in Japan and we witness the birth of Tokyo pop, also known as J-pop.

There haven’t been many successful artists to come out of Asia and make it big in the United States, but many have tried.

A case in point is Bleachmobile is an all-girl Japanese punk trio, who just released its first CD in the States, “Detonator.”

Similar to ex-Girl, another J-pop female trio, Bleachmobile rocks hard and rocks out in English, sort of.

The girls who haven’t quite mastered the English language are the No. 1 female band in their hometown of Okinawa, Japan and they also made a strong impression while touring in the United States last year.

Originally called Bleach, Bleachmobile changed its name after realizing there was already a band by that name that sings in English.

For being three young women that are cute as buttons, Bleachmobile rocks hard and puts out a fanatical kind of sound. These girls are frickin‘ angry and express themselves through thrash metal music. If one didn’t know any better, one would guess they don’t know how to play their respective instruments - they just bang on them hard and scream things in English you can’t quite decipher on tracks with names including, “Santa Claus,” “Trip to Hell” and “Piglet #28.”

While it sounds silly, it’s incredibly amusing. You don’t want to laugh, but sometimes it’s hard not to. And the music, while not as entertaining as the lyrics and beastly screams, isn’t too bad either.
