The Rocky Horror Picture Show made its silver screen debut in 1975 to moderate success after it was adapted from the original stage play. It quickly gained cult status.
In case youre unfamiliar with the movie, it was traditionally shown at midnight, and many theaters across the country carried it for several years. Some still do.
It was popular at these shows to throw rice during the wedding scene, hold up newspapers during the rain scene and generally interact with the characters in the movie.
Tonight, MSU students and local residents can experience this phenomenon at Common Grounds Coffeehouse in the basement of Akers Hall.
A group of MSU students will act out the story line as the movie plays in the background.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Admission is free, but there is a charge for a bag of props with confetti and newspaper to use during the performance.
Ive been a fan of Rocky Horror for years and this is a perfect venue for it, Common Grounds program coordinator and sociology junior Jeremy Grzymkowski said.
Journalism junior David Warden said hes wanted to be in a production like this for years.
This is something I wanted to do since I first saw it at the State Theater in Ann Arbor, he said. Warden will be acting out the part of Brad, the hero.
Erin Reichenbach, in the role of heroine Janet, said she is expecting it to go well.
People who have seen the movie but never the re-enactment are excited about coming, she said.
There will also be a dress-up contest for those interested.
But be warned, those who are not interested in off-the-wall dance numbers and transsexual transvestites might want to stay home.
People can go out late at night and just let loose and go crazy, Warden said.
