Womens soccer starts conference play 0-2

September 24, 2001

After a scoreless first half, the MSU women’s soccer team finally fell to the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday, losing 1-0 in its Big Ten season opener.

In the defense-dominated first half, both teams’ goalkeepers had six saves. Sophomore Stacy Heller stopped the ball for MSU.

But in the second half, Iowa forward Rennice Sherard found a way to beat Heller on an unassisted goal with only 10 minutes left in the game.

Iowa improved to 2-4 and 1-0.

The Spartans traveled to Illinois on Sunday hunting for their first conference win, but lost to the Fighting Illini 2-0.

MSU had only one shot on goal to the Illini’s 15 in the loss.

Over the weekend, MSU fell to 3-3-1 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten.

The team will host Wisconsin at 4 p.m. Friday at Old College Field.
