Kresge holds second annual fund-raiser

Kresge Art Museum went all-out for its second Twilight in the Garden fund-raiser Sunday at the MSU Horticultural Gardens. The first was last September.

Starting at $75, ticket sales for the event went toward the museum and its effort to build a new facility, scheduled to be completed in 2009.

It featured an address by MSU President M. Peter McPherson, performances by several local musicians and dancers, demonstrations by local artists and an auction of donated gifts.

Twilight chairwoman Ann Henricksen said patrons were enthusiastic about donating money and several over-bid auction items.

“They gave us more because they want to help the arts,” she said.

Mason artist Doug DeLind, who participated in the event last year, said this year’s fund-raiser was an improvement. DeLind gained recognition in the East Lansing community last year when he carved sculptures of Spartan basketball players from wood and displayed them at the corner of Grand River Avenue and Abbott Road.

Sunday he gave a demonstration, painting with Mason High School senior Sarah Cloutier.

“I thought it might be fun to take it to another level,” DeLind said. “It seemed like it could be a more enriching experience.”

Cloutier, whose family is friends with DeLind, said this fund-raiser was a good opportunity to advance her art career.

“Everyone has been so friendly,” she said. “It’s gotten me a little more used to working with people in relation to art.”

Ushering at the event were students from local high schools. Eunice Yu and Chloe Sweet, both juniors at Okemos High School, 2800 Jolly Road, were representing the school’s National Honor Society.

“If we had known about this we’d have come to see the art,” Yu said. “This was a good experience, it wasn’t drudgery or anything.”

The fund to construct a new facility was established in June 2000, and the estimated cost is $23 million. It will include space for classrooms, food services and a library, expanded exhibit areas for contemporary art and more parking.
