The MSU mens soccer team defeated Western Ontario 2-0 during exhibition play Sunday.
Freshman forward Ryan McMahen scored the game-winning goal midway through the first half. Sophomore midfielder Jeffrey Krass then padded the victory with a goal 45 seconds into the second half.
Head coach Joe Baum hopes the team gains consistency offensively before the season starts, but he took the shutout as a good sign of their defensive skills.
Our offense is a little inconsistent, but I was very pleased defensively, Baum said.
The Spartans had 15 shots to Western Ontarios six.
MSU goalkeeper Tyler Robinson had one save and backup Mike Robinson had two saves to shutout the Western Ontario offense.
They were solid, but I think we were able to play more players today due the humid weather, Baum said.
The Spartans begin the regular season at 2:30 p.m. Saturday when the host the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay at Old College Field.
