Police briefs 02/28/01

A 23-year-old male student and a 2l-year-old male student were arrested early Tuesday after an East Lansing police officer saw the two in a struggle with another male student.The officer was patrolling near Grand River Avenue and Abbott Road when he saw what appeared to be a fight, East Lansing police said. When the officer approached, two men fled the scene.The third man, a 19-year-old male student, told police he was blind and the men had taken his cane and a fraternity pledge pin he had on his sweatshirt.The two men were apprehended later near Grand River and Michigan avenues and the stolen property was recovered, police said. The men were being held in the East Lansing jail until they could be arraigned in 54-B District Court on robbery charges.

  • A 20-year-old male student reported his backpack stolen from an IM Sports-West gym while he was playing basketball.The student placed the bag in the second-floor gym bleachers while he played at 3 p.m. Monday, MSU police Detective Tony Willis said. When the student returned after the game, the backpack was gone.The bag and its contents, which included a watch, student identification card and clothes, is valued at $50. Police have no suspects.
  • A 20-year-old female student reported her purse missing after she left it in an Agricultural Engineering Hall classroom Thursday, Willis said.The purse and its contents are valued at $55. Police have no suspects.
  • A 23-year-old female student reported her cellular phone stolen Monday from the Business College Complex.The student left the phone on a desk in a classroom at 12:45 p.m., Willis said. When she returned for it at 2 p.m., it was gone.The phone is valued at $200 and police have no suspects.
  • A 28-year-old male instructor returned to his Agriculture Hall office after the weekend to find four quarters missing from his desk.The man had placed the dollar in change in his top desk drawer Thursday, Willis said. The office had not been locked during the weekend.Police have no suspects.
