Police briefs 02/14/01

A band instructor at Otto Middle School, 500 E. Thomas St., turned himself in around 1 p.m. Tuesday to Lansing police after Washtenaw County prosecutors issued a two-count felony warrant, both counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, Lansing police Lt. Ray Hall said.Lansing police believe Jeff Howenstine had relations with a 14-year-old former student between Aug. 1 and Jan. 31, Hall said.The teacher has been released on a $5,000 bond. The case is under investigation.

  • A 24-year-old male student reported his laptop computer stolen from an Eppley Center computer lab.The student left the computer unattended in the lab between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday, MSU police Detective Tony Willis said. The lab is kept open for student use. The computer is valued at $1,800.
  • A 30-year-old female student reported her purse stolen from the Main Library’s Cyber Cafe on Monday.The student forgot her purse when she changed tables in the cafe and it was gone when she returned for it about 15 minutes later, Willis said.The purse and its contents are valued at $45.
