Date auction breeds cash, fun

February 12, 2001
John Lewis, human resources senior and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. member, dances down the aisle as bids are taken for his date during a date auction Friday at the Business College Complex. A date with Lewis sold for $35. —

As the price of one date with William Griffin mounted from $50 to $80 to $100, LaTorsha Hill repeatedly threw her hand in the air, bidding more and more money Friday evening at National Pan-Hellenic Council’s Spring Date Auction.

“If I was her, I would wait until he was out in the hallway to ask for a date,” finance junior Latasha Golden remarked as she sat in the middle of the crowd, which filled N-100 Business College Complex to capacity.

But once Hill began, she wasn’t about to lose.

“I’m very competitive,” the marketing junior said. “Once I started bidding I wasn’t going to stop until I won.”

When Hill’s bid reached $115, everyone else’s hand lowered for the final time.

“I wasn’t planning on (bidding) beforehand,” she said. “It was a spur of the moment thing.”

And she says it was worth it, though before Friday night she had never met Griffin, an advertising and public resource management senior.

“I’ve seen him around campus before,” she said. “I thought he was pretty cute.
