Spartan beat Badgers in overtime

No. 3 MSU went on a 12-2 run in overtime to defeat No. 17 Wisconsin Saturday afternoon, 69-59. The win extended the Spartan’s home win streak to 39 games.

Senior guard Charlie Bell hit a three pointer with 28.5 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 57. Bell, who struggled shooting 3-of-12 from the field finished with 10 points and four assists.

The Spartans ceased a late 14-2 run by the Badgers with less than two minutes in regulation after a jumpshot by sophomore guard Jason Richardson. The Saginaw native had a career and game high 25 points.

Wisconsin guard Roy Boone led the Badgers with 22 points, while forward Mark Vershaw added 18 points of 8-of-11 shooting.

The Spartans trailed early, after a 8-0 scoring run capped off by a Vershaw hook shot to trail 17-9.

MSU had its first lead of the game at the 3:18 mark of the first half after a Richardson three pointer to make it 30-29.

Two free throws by freshman guard Marcus Taylor - who had six points and six assists as the starting point guard - put MSU up 36-31 at the half.

MSU lead by as many as 10 points in regulation until guard Chris Penney connected on a three pointer to give the Badgers a 51-50 lead with 5:21 remaining.

Vershaw hit a jump shot to extend the Wisconsin lead to five at the 1:51 mark - which was the last lead the Badgers had in the game. MSU scored the last five points in regulation to send the game into overtime and seal the win.

MSU had yet another edge in rebounding over its opponent, earning a 39-22 advantage, while committing only eight turnovers.

The next Big Ten match-up for the Spartans is Jan. 21 when it hosts unranked Ohio State at 1 p.m..
