A purple cow will be found on the fourth floor of the Union this weekend - but most people wont consider it a strange occurrence.
The Alliance of Lesbian-Bi-Gay and Transgendered Students will host its Purple Cow Soiree Sunday starting at 5 p.m. The event, to be held in the Council of Progressive Students office in Rm. 441 of the Union, will feature board games, music, movies and pizza.
David Warden, public relations coordinator for the Alliance, said the event is designed to take some of the pressure off of those who may be new to the organization.
Some people may not want to come up to the office because it houses the Alliance and they dont necessarily want to be identified as gay, the journalism junior said. This is just a social event for people to get to know members of the Alliance and to become more comfortable with the organization.
The events name stems from a group discussion series sponsored by the organization years ago, said Alliance co-director Carrie Copeland.
While most of the series focused on discussion topics, Purple Cow nights would add fun and relaxation after nights of more serious conversations, the interdisciplinary studies in humanities senior said.
Copeland said not only was the name of the event catchy, but she also felt is was important to resurrect the Purple Cow theme.
I think its really important for us to represent all LBGT people on campus, she said. Not everyone is interested in panel discussions, or programs, or activism, so its important for us to have fun, as well.
The Purple Cow Soiree is open to all people, Copeland said.
Anyone thats interested in learning more about the Alliance of Lesbian-Bi-Gay and Transgendered Students and what we do, or what programs we put on should come. Its a good chance to get involved.
