Alumni of a fraternity forced nearly half of their brothers out of the MSU chapter, saying members have failed to adhere to university and chapter guidelines.
Members of MSUs Sigma Phi Epsilon were summoned on Dec. 9 to the Student Services building to be interviewed by the fraternitys alumni.
As police waited at the chapters house to prevent violence, members were questioned by an Alumni Advisory Council about the brothers involvement in, and commitment to, the fraternity.
When the interviews were finished, 31 of the initial 77 members were expelled, resigned or given alumni status. Ousted members were evicted from the chapters house and banned from Sig Eps property, 234 N.Harrison Ave.
All this in the middle of exam week - stress of studying was now compounded by housing concerns.
The Alumni Advisory Council says the interviews and reorganization were a necessary and beneficial action, citing substance abuse problems, risk management policy violations and subpar performance in membership development and recruitment.
Sigma Phi Epsilon is a fraternity with standards and accountability and the individuals who were removed from the chapter failed
