BERLIN - Ridley Scott’s “Hannibal” and a version of Fritz Lang’s 1926 silent classic “Metropolis” with a new score are among 16 world premieres scheduled at the 51st Berlin International Film Festival, to be held Feb. 7-18.

In the main competition, 24 features and 11 short films will compete for the top Golden Bear prize, to be awarded by a jury led by American producer Bill Mechanic, organizers have announced.

The premiere of British director Mike Nichols’ “Wit,” starring Emma Thompson, and Jean-Jacques Annaud’s “Enemy at the Gates” are among Europe’s contributions.

Among the American films being screened: Steven Soderbergh’s drug-war drama “Traffic” and Spike Lee’s “Bamboozled.”

Annaud’s film will open the event. The festival will close with a restored print of Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film, “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Sting performs at Super Bowl

NEW YORK - British-born Sting is scheduled to perform at the Super Bowl in Tampa, Fla.

“I know how important the Super Bowl is to you, but I’m a soccer fan,” Sting says in the Jan. 29 issue of People magazine, now on newsstands. He plans to play “Desert Rose” and “Roxanne” during the pre-game show.

“It’s a surreal gig,” he says. “It’s like playing this huge frat party.”
