Sorority to honor sister with memorial service

November 29, 2000

Members of Alpha Phi will be holding a small, informal remembrance service for their former sister Lindsey Shapiro on Thursday evening at their sorority house.

Shapiro died in a car accident Nov. 21 in Ontario. She was heading home from Toronto to Farmington Hills for Thanksgiving.

Faudia El-Asfahani, an Alpha Phi member and advertising and marketing junior, said the sorority sisters want the vigil to be a happy occasion and allow those who knew Shapiro to remember her.

“Our entire chapter is putting forth all possible efforts to remember Shapiro in the most positive way,” El-Asfahani said. “She meant everything in the world to us.

“We are doing everything we can to remember her that way.”

El-Asfahani has been coordinating the event with the greek system and MSU on behalf of the sorority.

The remembrance will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday for family and sorority members. However, anyone who wishes to say goodbye will be welcome to do so after 7:30 p.m., El-Asfahani said.

The sorority has also invited university officials to attend the remembrance.

“We wanted to have some time to show Shapiro’s family how she lived on a daily basis,” El-Asfahani said. “At 7:30 we will open the house so that her friends can have a chance to pay their respects.”

Shapiro’s roommate, Becky Vandewalle, said she believes Shapiro will always be with her, no matter where she goes.

“I miss her every day,” the merchandising management junior said. “I miss her voice, her face, and I miss the way she jumped off the top bunk every morning.

“She was a ray of sunshine.”

The sorority house will be decorated with flowers and picture collages of Shapiro to commemorate her life and keep her spirit alive, El-Asfahani said.

“We’d like to thank everyone for showing their concern and support during these trying times,” she said. “It means more to us than words can say.”

Kathleen Devereux, a communication junior, said every time she closes her eyes she can see Shapiro smiling.

The two went to North Farmington High School and lived together in Wilson Hall before they became Alpha Phis.

“We’ve been through it all together,” she said. “She was always smiling, I could just look at her and she would brighten my day. I know there won’t be a single day that goes by that we won’t think about her.

“She left her imprint on our hearts and we’re going to cherish her memory, always.”
