A transfer of $10,000 from the Art Set Aside fund to the East Lansing Film Festival could be approved at tonight’s city council work session.
The Film Festival will be held March 22-25 at Wells Hall. This will be the festival’s fourth year. It is the largest festival in Michigan that offers foreign and independent films from individuals and students.
Lori VanOmmeren, Urban Designer and Community Analyst for the city of East Lansing, said the film festival has been partially supported by the East Lansing Arts Commission in the past.
The reallocated money will go toward general festival costs.
Another issue to be discussed is the proposal for pedestrian-activated crosswalk lights. The council will discuss benefits and problems of installing lights north of Abbott Road and at Library Lane.
East Lansing Engineering Administrator John Matuszak said the city budgeted $40,000 for the lights to be installed.
Mayer Pro Tem Beth Schwarze said lights should be installed in those places for the safety of pedestrians and bikers.
“It seems so many people trying to walk across Abbott Road are almost hit by the cars that speed by,” Schwarze said. “It would be a good idea to finally get these lights installed.”
