Fire kills Lansing man

September 27, 2000

Lansing police and fire crews are investigating a suspicious death in connection with a fire that occuring early Tuesday.

The Lansing Fire Department received a call at 4:25 a.m. Tuesday about a small apartment fire at 315 N. Pennsylvania Ave. A concerned neighbor from a nearby apartment heard a fire detector going off and alerted the fire department, said Brian Gaukel, assistant fire marshall for the department.

When crews entered the home at 4:27 a.m., they found the body of a man in his mid-30s on the floor.

“We attempted to resuscitate the person and then transported him to Sparrow (Hospital) where he was later pronounced dead,” Gaukel said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon to determine if the man’s death was a result of the fire.

Tests are already underway to determine how the fire broke out.

Firefighters had the blaze contained by about 4:49 a.m., Gaukel said. No other injuries were reported.
