Fall features feel-good films

September 28, 2000
Denzel Washington and Will Patton star in “Remember the Titans,” one of the fall films opening in the next few weeks.

With the first batch of cinema greats (and not-so-greats) of the fall open and, in some cases, shut, the second batch is ready to roll out the red carpet and walk into the box office.

As great movies such as Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous” and Christopher McQuarrie’s “The Way of The Gun” make room for the newer, younger squad of films, it’s time to preview what will be coming out soon.

Opening this weekend

“Remember the Titans”

This movie practically is set to be one of the biggest feel-good films of the fall.

Starring Denzel Washington (“The Bone Collector,” “The Siege”) and Will Patton (“Armageddon”), the story is based on events that occurred in Alexandria, Va., in the early 1970s.

Washington’s character is hired as the football coach at T.C. Williams High School, which has just been integrated.

“Girlfight”

Starring Michelle Rodriguez and Jaime Tirelli, this movie follows Rodriguez’s character, Diana Guzman, as she struggles to find her niche in the world.

Surprisingly, the only place she seems comfortable is the boxing ring. But boxing is merely the backdrop, as the movie is more of a dramatic, coming-of-age piece than action.

Opening Oct. 6

“Meet The Parents”

Sure to be a good comedy, starring Ben Stiller (“There’s Something About Mary”) and Robert DeNiro (“Men of Honor”), this story follows the ready-to-get-engaged Greg Focker (Stiller) as he meets his girlfriend’s parents.

The potential in-laws seem picture-perfect, but after numerous disasters, Greg’s weekend is anything but.

“Get Carter”

In a remake of the 1971 film of the same name, action star Sylvester Stallone takes the place of Michael Caine, who played the mob-enforcing Carter in the original.

In the film, Carter travels back home to attend his brother’s funeral and unravels the evidence that proves his brother’s death was not an accident, but a murder.

Opening Oct. 13

“The Ladies Man”

Yet another Saturday Night Live skit to make it to the silver screen. Tim Meadows stars in this comedy about his SNL character, Leon Phelps, better known as “the ladies man.”

He is more or less a hilarious, 1970s radio talk show host who loves to provide his listeners with some of the worst, yet funniest, advice.

“Dr. T and The Women”

Starring Richard Gere, Helen Hunt and Liv Tyler, this movie follows Gere, a gynecologist, through his mid-life crisis.

The movie also stars Farrah Fawcett and Kate Hudson, who starred in Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous.”
