Saturday afternoon's matchup between Michigan State and No. 8 Maryland was the first game in the Breslin Center since the devastating shooting on campus Monday night that took the lives of three Spartans and sent five students to Sparrow Hospital. For warmups, MSU wore t-shirts with the words “Spartan Strong” written on the front, while the Terrapins wore green and orange ribbons on their warmup tops to show support for the Michigan State community—orange is the color of gun violence awareness. Before the game, a moment of silence was taken in remembrance of Arielle Anderson, Alexandria Verner and Brian Fraser. The silence was heavy with the weight of what had transpired just days before, and the moment had players, coaches and fans choked up. Interim Head Women's Basketball Coach Dean Lockwood said during the post-game press conference how proud he was of his players for making the decision to play in the game against Maryland, but there was no discredit or dishonor had they chosen not to play.“Very, very proud of their effort, very proud of their resiliency, very proud of just how they responded to the events of the past week and how they kept their unity of purpose in this game,” Lockwood said. “We all need healing, and one of the things—sport can do that and be that, so we wanted to kind of be a healing element for our community”

Leading a basketball team means more than just having the highest amount of points on the scoresheet at the end of a game. There are so many moving pieces that earn someone the title of leader, and Interim Head Women’s Basketball Coach Dean Lockwood thinks that sophomore guard DeeDee Hagemann is one of those players that deserves the accolade. Hagemann has been consistently pulling in long minutes on the court for the Spartans. In the Sunday afternoon overtime win over Penn State, the sophomore spent just over 40 minutes on the floor putting up shots and directing plays. Hagemann was on the floor longer than any other Spartan. “Their communication was a lot better," Lockwood said. "DeeDee did a great job up front leading us. I thought our other players responded to her. There was great communicating. We changed our ball screen defense a couple of times, and again, I thought there was really solid communication in those moments.” Against the Lady Lions on Sunday, Hagemann lead both teams with eight assists and three steals. On top of all of that, she also had 15 points.Toward the end of regulation, Hagemann was fouled and was sent to the free-throw line to shoot two. Neither of the shots went in, and regulation ended in a tie. Despite the two missed shots, she still went out for overtime with a vengeance and helped to secure the win for Michigan State, and her effort did not go unnoticed. “When something bad happens—a person who's not mentally strong—they almost become like a victim," Lockwood said. "They start feeling bad, they feel sorry. And a mentally strong person bounces back, and DeeDee I thought did a great job of that after those missed free throws. ... I credit her for having the mental strength to you know—okay, missed some key free throws there. Yep, it could have got her down, but she just fought back.”Despite having assumed a leadership position on the team, Hagemann is just a sophomore, and still has so much room to grow as a leader and a player. “Dean communicated with me, he said that he needed me to be this leader. He needed me to be a coach on the floor,” Hagemann said. “So I took that, put that in my back pocket, and after he said that I have just been focused on that. And obviously we've been getting some wins.”Hagemann and the Spartans will be on the road Wednesday night to take on Purdue at 7 p.m. The game will also be streaming on BTN+.

After a dominant win on the road against Wisconsin, the Michigan State women’s basketball team will be taking on Penn State Sunday, Feb. 12 at the Breslin Center. Graduate student guard Kamaria McDaniel is going into the game against her former team coming off of a spectacular performance in Madison. McDaniel sunk a career-high six three-pointers, and led the team with a whopping 29 points after a couple of games stuck in a single-digit rut. “I think every game is pretty big," McDaniel said. "I’m at a place right now in my life, I'm just taking everything the same way, the same approach. I don't get too up or too down about anything. I love the people at Penn State. I always have a special place in my heart. They gave me the opportunity, so I love them, and I’m ready to compete.”The Spartans have yet to take on the Nittany Lions this season, but in their last meeting, Penn State was able to secure the narrow win 79-71, and hold onto their 31-22 all-time advantage over Michigan State. The contest against the Lady Lions will be the Spartan’s fifth consecutive game with Dean Lockwood acting as Interim Head Coach while Head Women's Basketball Coach Suzy Merchant is still recovering from her medical incident on Jan. 28. Lockwood is currently 1-3 as head coach this season—the team's first win without Merchant coming just Wednesday. “I love the game, and I love coaching — and this is something you just have to stand in the gap and do what needs to be done," Lockwood said. ”I love what I've done. I’m Very thankful, very grateful to do something that I love,” “It's a different role than obviously, I came here for, or even started the season with, but once again, it's not a foreign role or something I've never done. I am enjoying it, but at the same time … it's Suzy’s team, Suzy’s program, and we want to do justice to that. I'm doing everything I can to reinforce that as well.”Much like the Spartans, the Lady Lions are currently sitting at a 4-9 record in conference play, and Penn State is coming off a massive 95-51 loss against Iowa in Happy Valley.Despite a losing Big Ten record, Penn State has an incredibly talented roster. PSU senior guard Makenna Marisa is a star player for the Lady Lions. She currently sits at sixth in the Big Ten in scoring, averaging 17.9 points per game, and redshirt sophomore guard Leilani Kapinus leads the league in steals averaging 3.5 steals per game.“I think that every team in this in this league is gonna give us a dogfight—give everyone a dogfight,” McDaniel said. “Everyone wants to win. Everybody wants to prove themselves and trying to have bigger goals to reach, so I definitely don't expect anything less than a dogfight or focused performance from them”Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. at the Breslin Center and the matchup can be streamed on BTN+.
