No. 20 MSU field hockey (7-5, 2-3 Big Ten) dropped a pivotal conference game on Saturday afternoon. The Indiana Hoosiers (8-3, 1-3 Big Ten) proved too much for the Spartans to handle and handed MSU a 2-0 loss.

No. 20 MSU field hockey (7-4, 2-2 Big Ten) will wrap up its four-game road trip this weekend in Indiana with two more games. On Saturday, the Spartans will take on the No. 18 Indiana Hoosiers (8-3, 0-3 Big Ten) and follow it up with a game against Ball State (3-7) on Sunday.

Following MSU hockey’s annual Green and White game on Sunday, the Spartans took to the ice again Tuesday night to face off against the Windsor Lancers in an exhibition match. With the regular season starting next week against Massachusetts, head coach Tom Anastos was looking to see where his team stands. After MSU looked impressive in the first two periods to take a 2-1 lead, the Lancers came back to tie it and win in a shootout.

A week after No. 20 MSU field hockey (7-4 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) dropped two Big Ten games, the Spartans rebounded well in the win column. While they did secure the victories, MSU was exposed by its same inconsistencies and bad habits.

As East Lansing prepared itself for a prime time football game Saturday night, No. 20 MSU field hockey (7-4 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) was trying to take care of business against the Monmouth Hawks (4-6). MSU was able to notch a valuable Big Ten win over Rutgers on Friday, but Saturday proved to be a bigger test. After falling behind 3-1, MSU came storming back in the second half and beat the Hawks 4-3 in overtime.

On Friday afternoon, No. 20 MSU field hockey (6-4 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) invaded the east coast to take on Rutgers in the teams' first Big Ten meeting. The Spartans were able to pull out a tough 3-2 victory over the Scarlet Knights.

MSU field hockey (5-3 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) opened their Big Ten home schedule on Friday afternoon against the reigning Big Ten champion Penn State (7-2 overall, 1-1 Big Ten). After surrendering a lead early in the game once again, MSU was unable to make it four comeback victories in a row and lost, 2-1.

When head coach Tom Anastos took over the MSU hockey program back in 2011, he envisioned this sort of progress heading into his fourth season. Even with a lackluster 11-18-7 record last year, the Spartans found themselves in a lot of close games that could have gone either way.

With another come-from-behind overtime victory for No. 18 MSU field hockey this past weekend, the morale of the team is high. With the victory however, the Spartans know that falling behind in every game is like playing with dynamite in the Big Ten.

Last year, No. 16 MSU field hockey played 24 games as they advanced through the Big Ten Tournament and into the Elite Eight. Of those 24 games, five of them went to overtime. This year, MSU has played the same amount of overtime in just seven games.

No. 16 MSU field hockey (5-2 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) found itself in another overtime matchup on Friday, as they opened up the Big Ten schedule against Ohio State. With plenty of overtime experience under their belt, the Spartans were able to come out victorious by a score of 4-3.

Painting the rock on Farm Lane for the first time was how marketing senior Colleen Anthony and her teammates wanted to recruit for their Intramural Sports team. However, they had two things on their side to set them apart from the many others before them — a highly competitive sport that most had never heard of before and guys dancing to radio hits in “team sexy” Speedos.

After two exhibition games and six non-conference games, MSU field hockey (4-2 overall) will kick off Big Ten play this weekend in Columbus as they take on Ohio State (2-3 overall) at 3 p.m.

Early in the season, there seemed to be a couple of trends that were forming for No. 16 MSU field hockey. Among them, the team consistently found themselves in overtime finishes and always wound up splitting weekend series.
