Campus fitness buffs soon will see updated exercise equipment as MSU administrators have provided funding to upgrade the intramural sports facilities.According to an April 4 memo sent to university officials the Intramural Facilities Endowment will initially provide 626000 for equipment and facility maintenance equipment replacement and facility improvements. -

A developing scandal over ties between the student loan industry and college financial aid officers is adding momentum to a congressional push to overhaul the system for college loans.Congress members say new rules being pushed by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo on how loan companies deal with campuses should be applied nationwide."The case for major reform cannot be clearer" said Massachusetts Democrat Edward Kennedy who leads the Senate education committee. -
Trustees nip dorm smoking in the butt

Thank you for not smoking.The MSU Board of Trustees and Residence Halls Association have teamed up to relay this message to students faculty and staff by banning smoking in all residence halls Owen Graduate Center and Van Hoosen Hall residential spaces.Starting August 1 2008 smoking will be banned within 25 feet of building or apartment entrances."It does not tell people they cannot smoke but it does reduce the locations on campus where smoking is permissible" said Nancy Allen coordinator of MSU Health4U. -

Across the country college administrators are asking themselves "What if"What if the massacre on Virginia Tech University's campus took place closer to homeOn our campus the answer isn't reassuring.At least thirty-two people were killed and dozens wounded Monday after a gunman at Virginia Tech shot up dorms and classrooms before turning a gun on himself The Associated Press reported.If a similar incident took place at MSU university officials said there is no plan of action in place.MSU spokesman Terry Denbow said it's difficult to predict how university officials would react to a shooting rampage."If you're at a residence hall and someone comes in shooting I don't know if we have a plan for that" Denbow said. -
Trustees vote to lift housing prices

On Friday university housing rates went up about 5 percent MSU's anti-discrimination policy was altered to include gender identity and a bid was accepted to begin construction on IM Sports-West's indoor pool.And that was only part of the MSU Board of Trustees meeting.Trustees said they voted to increase housing rates in order to remain nationally competitive.8226 Beginning in the fall university apartment rates for one-bedroom apartments will increase by an extra 30 151 from 600 to 630 a month. -
MSU, N-Viro fund eco-fuel

The T.B. Simon Power Plant on campus recently conducted an experiment using biosolid waste to generate electricity as an alternative to burning coal.The experiment was conducted by MSU and N-Viro International Corp. a company that works with recycling and alternative fuels.The power plant burned a mixture of biomass and coal in a standard boiler generating enough electricity to power campus for two days.Burning the biomass and coal mixture yielded a similar energy output as burning coal. -
