College to receive donation

An eight-year partnership was secured Wednesday between the future Grand Rapids campus of the MSU medical school and the Van Andel Institute which is pledging 16 million to the school.The money will be used to conduct cancer cardiovascular disease and neuroscience research said Marsha Rappley dean of the College of Human Medicine."The most important part is the partnership that we have with the institute and the commitment to work together long term" Rappley said. -

Game-day arrests not alarming, police say

East Lansing police arrested 23 people Saturday night and also had three times more assault calls than each of this year's previous two football Saturdays.On the same day MSU police arrested 131 people 151 a 54 percent increase compared to the number of arrests on the 2004 Notre Dame game day.MSU spokesman Terry Denbow and Lee June vice president of student affairs and services declined to comment about the arrest statistics from Saturday.June who was part of the discussions that led to tailgating rule changes in 2004 declined to comment Tuesday."I prefer to yield my comments to Fred Poston since he's been the one looking at numbers" June said.Poston MSU's vice president for finance and operations said Sunday he would review MSU police reports Monday and provide comment but he did not return calls Tuesday.Denbow declined to comment on the arrest statistics because he said MSU officials are still analyzing the figures."The numbers might not seem extremely truthful when looking at them the first time" Denbow said. -
Talking trash

Both the state and the university are recycling the old ways they look at trash. Legislators are working to reduce the amount of garbage Michigan receives from Canada while the MSU Board of Trustees is voting today on the future of a possible expanded recycling center on campus. -

Student trapped in Lebanon

Waleed Brinjikji took a tense taxicab ride along a bomb-riddled road in Lebanon with his mother aunt and three younger cousins Sunday.The ride from the small town in which they were staying to Beirut cost his family 1300 and put them under the constant threat of attack.But Brinjikji an MSU physiology senior said the ride its cost and the stress it caused his family was well worth it since it allowed them to leave the Lebanese town that was devastated by Israeli bombings in the past week."We had to leave this place because psychologically it was too hard to stay there any longer" Brinjikji said.Brinjikji was in Syria studying and spending time with his family when they decided to take a trip to Lebanon to visit his mother's birthplace. -

MySpace.com is updating its security measures so minors under 18 will be given their own private section.The section is being introduced because of a bill being pushed through Congress that wants to pressure sites into boosting Internet security.The bill which would affect social-networking sites like MySpace would involve a filtering system in libraries and schools to protect minors from online predators.The bill called Deleting Online Predators Act of 2006 is a revision of the Communication Act of 1934. -

More than a year and a half ago MSU's library server was breached.It was the biggest threat to online security the university had ever seen and MSU officials scrambled to try and minimize the threat.David Gift vice provost of libraries computing and technology said there was "potential" exposure to Social Security numbers but evidence surfaced that none had been taken. -

Ten acres of MSU's vast agricultural fields are reserved solely for growing organic food.The MSU Student Organic Farm 3291 College Road in Holt serves as a place not only to grow certified organic food but research organic farming techniques as well according to its Web site.The farm focuses on Community Supported Agriculture or CSA in which the produce from the year-round farming is divided into shares and sold before the food is harvested.A share feeds up to about four adults and is not limited to one family said farm manager and instructor Jeremy Moghtader.Shares are sold in spring summer and fall and cost 460 per share said Holly Markham an environmental policy and anthropology senior who works at the farm. -

By Justin KrollThe State News Bravo Cucina Italiana restaurant voluntarily closed its doors Thursday night after more than 200 customers contacted the Ingham County Health Department saying they had gotten sick after eating at the restaurant. Both the health department and spokespersons for the restaurant have confirmed that there is no sign of what has caused this problem and an investigation is underway.
