Guitar Hero commercials getting it right

By: Joey Nowak Posted: 03/30/09 6:27pm

The people at Guitar Hero must be sitting on a gold mine.

After dishing out who knows how much money to Michael Phelps, Tony Hawk, Kobe Bryant and Alex Rodriguez for one commercial they’ve done it again.

This time, it’s a college basketball edition for the new Metallica version of the game.

This commercial features former Indiana and Texas Tech coach (and current ESPN analyst) Bob Knight, Louisville coach Rick Pitino, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina coach Roy Williams. Granted, these guys were probably better sports and didn’t demand the same top dollar those star athletes did, but I’m sure it was a nightmare getting them all together for a commercial and it probably still cost a fortune. It’s just a shame they didn’t get Tom Izzo.

But I say it was worth it. I marveled at the first edition of the commercial and laughed at Knight in the Metallica version (good call on putting him front and center, by the way). The advertisers really did their homework. The first edition came out for Cyber Monday — huge sales after Thanksgiving and this most recent commercial came out as March Madness coincides with their new Metallica edition of the game.

Guitar Hero is probably the most universally popular game that appeals to men, women and a variety of ages and demographics. If they continue to shell out the big bucks and put together gem commercials like that,
they’ll stay on top.

That commercial was overrated. I didn’t find it that entertaining or funny. Honestly I expected a lot more out of it when seeing the making on SportsCenter earlier today. I don’t understand why an article was written about it.

I find this apalling. How can a sports figure be put in any sort of category among the ranks of Metallica? There are so many things wrong with this article. First, it’s sad that this great band is being exploited by some video game company. Second, when is advertising ever a great thing? Advertising is what makes people depressed. The viewer is made to believe that they NEED whatever commodity is being advertised, and then spends more money than they even have to fill some void in their life with the product. Bad news.

This article makes me unhappy
