With my term coming to an end as an MSU men’s basketball beat reporter since the spring, I can’t help but still feel connected to the team.

So after the blizzard that struck during the attempted second half of Sunday’s field hockey game, I have an extra appreciation for what our camera people do.

  • Fantasy football, week 11

Well, it looks like I struggled with last week’s picks as Greg Camarillo had four catches and Willis McGahee busted out from his slump. Oh well, I went 1-1, so I’m back at it again.

Olympics served as needed distraction

With the 2008 Olympics coming to an end and the rest of the world moving on, I remain sitting in my imaginary seat in Beijing —- head down, heart broken and an emptiness inside.

I can’t help but think, maybe if there were more games it could have gone on longer … to pull me out of this funk that I’ve found myself in.

No more Michael Phelps screaming like a hyena after a case of Red Bull and another world-record time.

No more marathon runners or intense weightlifters to make me feel self-conscious about my workout and eating habits.

No more Dream Team, Redeem Team, We’ll Cream Your Team or whatever they’re called nowadays.

It’s just all gone, for a lengthy four-year span.

And sure, some of the sports are a little odd and every time you flip it on you mumble to yourself, “That’s cool and all, but how the hell do you get into playing that, and moreover, become talented with it?”

But it seemed that no matter the time of day, some sport was always being televised during the last couple weeks.

Couldn’t sleep? Flip on NBC, maybe Shawn Johnson will be flipping through the air or China’s baseball team will be going 1-for-87 with one home run that makes you feel bad for them, but at the same time, they’re obnoxious, and you don’t care.

It gave me something to do.

Wait a minute … I just had a revelation.

The true reason I adored the Olympics was because it took my mind off the deep depression I was in about the Detroit Tigers’ failure to be in the pennant race.

The Olympics served as a way to numb the pain.

With the 110 medals the United States earned now in the past, I’ll have to go back to the 110 earned runs the Tigers will allow in the upcoming week.

I’m a loyal Tigers fan, it just really hurts as of late.
