Spartan basketball recruits garner national recognition

By: Cash Kruth Posted: 09/21/09 8:23pm

In its latest team basketball recruiting rankings, ESPNU ranks the MSU men’s basketball program as having the ninth best recruiting class for the class of 2010.

The class consists of guard Keith Appling (Detroit Pershing), shooting guard Russell Byrd (Blackhawk Christian in Fort Wayne, Ind.) and center Alex Gauna (Eaton Rapids).

ESPNU calls the Appling “a great natural scorer who is continuing to develop as a point guard,” while labeling the 6-foot-7 Byrd as “perhaps he best shooter in the class.”

The recruiting service considers the 6-foot-9 Gauna a “developing big man with talent.”

Ohio State is ranked No. 1, while Illinois (No. 4) and Michigan (No. 14) are other Big Ten teams found in the rankings.
