Leaving Oxford

By: Alex DiFilippo Posted: 10/25/09 12:51am

Oxford, Ohio — Wow, wow, wow.

I really can’t believe what I just witnessed.

I’ll be honest; at first, I was a little bit disappointed I was going to miss the big MSU vs. Iowa football game this weekend. I mean, the hockey team was playing No. 1 Miami (Ohio) and probably was going to get smoked.

But in hindsight, I’m glad I was here in Oxford.

I just saw the MSU hockey team defeat the best team in the land, 3-2, and in the most dramatic fashion.

Junior forward Andrew Rowe scored the game-winner at 3:19 of overtime, despite the RedHawks having all the momentum going their way.

The Spartans only recorded 22 shots, compared to Miami’s 37, but managed to take advantage of their chances. Sophomore goaltender Drew Palmisano played fantastic for the Spartans and kept them in the game.

This was a huge win for the Spartans. I’m still shocked. What a game and team effort.

It’s time to start thinking this team is legit. Yes, it’s still early, but things are looking up for the MSU hockey program.

Here are the answers to my pre-game questions:

Will Miami come out hot tonight?
The RedHawks came out of the gates flying. But the Spartans were able to withstand the early pressure. Junior forward Corey Tropp’s goal was absolutely huge. It took the wind out of Miami’s sail and completely quieted the crowd. Without a doubt, Miami is a very good team and I think they were a bit shocked at how good the Spartans played.

How will Palmisano look?
The goaltending was great for MSU again tonight. Palmisano stood on his head, making 35 saves on the night. Palmy was finding the puck through traffic and didn’t allow any big rebounds. Both goaltenders played great for the Spartans this weekend, and without their efforts, it’s unlikely the Spartans would have earned the split.

Will the Spartans stay out of the box?
MSU took eight penalties tonight. But a lot of the calls were questionable. Two penalties were called on the Spartans for simply lifting the stick of Miami players. MSU allowed a power play goal, but scored two of its own. The team still needs to play more disciplined, but a win is a win.
