Gymnastics extends home winning streak to four meets

February 25, 2012

The MSU gymnastics team continued its dominance at Jenison Field House, toppling Ball State 195.025-193.300 to improve to 4-2-1 on the season and 4-1-0 at home. The Spartans have not lost at home since the season opener against then-No. 16 Pittsburgh.

On vault, the Spartans got another solid performance from sophomore Taira Neal, who scored 9.825 on the event, good enough for second behind Ball State’s Nicole Allen. It marked the first time all season that Neal did not take the top spot in a dual competition. Freshman Ashley Noll also placed for her vault performance, coming in at third with a score of 9.775.

All six Spartan gymnasts scored higher than the Cardinal gymnasts on the bar routine, giving MSU the advantage heading into the final two rotations. Senior Jackie Berg took first on bars with a score of 9.850, followed by senior Daneen Haba’s 9.800 and freshman Alina Cartwright’s 9.775.

The Spartans continued their run on balance beam, where they proved last week’s score of 49.000 was no fluke. Behind Berg’s meet-high 9.800, MSU posted a team score of 48.675 which gave the Spartans a 146.200-144.950 edge headed into the final rotation.

Sophomore Dani Levy took top marks on the floor routine with a score of 9.825 to help MSU to a team score that cracked the 195 mark for the second straight week. Noll tied with senior Alyssa Brennan and two Cardinal gymnasts for second on floor with scores of 9.800.

The Spartans will return to Jenison Field House Friday night for their final home meet of the year against Illinois-Chicago.
