Men's basketball escapes Wisconsin with 63-60 overtime win

January 3, 2012

Despite all the Big Ten championships and Final Fours, MSU head coach Tom Izzo never has been successful in Madison, Wisc.

Before Wednesday night’s game against No. 18 Wisconsin, Izzo was 0-8 against the Badgers in Wisconsin’s home arena, the Kohl Center, since 2001.

But, in a game played much like you would expect from the Spartans and Badgers, No. 10 MSU outlasted Wisconsin 63-60 in overtime after a 3-pointer as time expired by Ryan Evans was ruled to be after the buzzer. The win was Izzo’s first at the Kohl Center since Bo Ryan took over for the Badgers.

“We fought through a lot,” Izzo told Spartan Sports Network after the game. “Give this team credit. We deserved to win this game.”

The first half was sloppy without much offensive flow, as Wisconsin took a 22-21 lead into the break. The Spartans missed 10 layups and did not attempt a 3-point shot in the first half on the way to shooting 33 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes. The Badgers were worse, though, shooting 27 percent from the field.

“I did not think we played great,” Izzo said. “I thought the energy on both teams was very average early.”

In the second half, foul trouble began to catch up with the Spartans.

Senior forward Draymond Green picked up his fourth foul with about nine minutes to play in regulation, forcing him to the bench for most of the rest of the way. Shortly after, sophomore center Adreian Payne also picked up his fourth.

However, as he often has in recent weeks, sophomore guard Keith Appling came to the rescue for the Spartans.

Appling scored eight of the next 11 MSU points, as the Spartans built a 50-45 lead with 3:18 to play.

Wisconsin All-American guard Jordan Taylor kept the Badgers alive, though, eventually tying the game at 50 with a free throw and sending it to overtime.

In the overtime session, MSU appeared to have the game put away, leading 63-57 with 20 seconds remaining. However, Taylor stepped up again, hitting a 3-pointer to make it a one-possession game.

Following two missed free throws by Green, Wisconsin had one more chance. Taylor missed a 3-pointer, but Evans grabbed an offensive rebound, dribbled to the 3-point line and banked in a make as time expired.

At first, the officials counted the basket, but after a long deliberation — made longer by the fact the official clock and arena clock did not line up — the shot was ruled no good.

Despite the foul trouble and previous struggles at Kohl Center, Izzo said his team never crumbled in high-pressure situations.

“We didn’t die when it went into overtime,” Izzo said. “(But) we should have won it in regulation.”

Green led MSU with his eighth double-double of the season — 18 points and 14 rebounds — while Appling scored 16 and junior center Derrick Nix chipped in with eight.

The Spartans now are riding a 14-game winning streak since dropping their first two games of the season and start Big Ten play with three straight wins.

MSU has a week off before playing Iowa next Tuesday at Breslin Center.
