Spartans fall to Duke in NYC, 74-69

November 15, 2011

Mike Krzyzewski passed Bob Knight on the all-time wins list with Duke’s 74-69 victory against the MSU men’s basketball team Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.

The Blue Devil head coach reached his 903rd win riding his team’s strength of outside shooting with a scorching 50 percent from 3-point range.

The Spartans (0-2) kept the game to within one point at halftime but fell apart in the second half before rallying late.

No. 6 Duke (3-0) relied heavily on guard Andre Dawkins who shot 6-for-10 from beyond the arc for 26 points. Guard Seth Curry finished with 20 points, 10 of which came from the free throw line.

The Spartans struggled to find offensive cohesion shooting and turned the ball over 20 times.

Sophomore guard Keith Appling led the Spartans with 22 points.

For the second straight game, MSU struggled with foul trouble. Duke shot 41 free throws compared to MSU’s 18.

The Spartans start 0-2 for the first time since 1976. MSU now can relax a little, after starting the season with two games against top-10 opponents in Duke and No. 1 North Carolina, with Texas Southern on Friday at Breslin Center.
