E.L. asking residents to remove snow on sidewalks by midnight

November 30, 2011

After as much as ten inches of snow fell across the Lansing and East Lansing area last night, the clock is ticking for East Lansing residents to clear their property of snow before facing fines from the city.

Residents must remove snow from the sidewalks on their property before midnight tonight.

Because of a new ordinance passed earlier this year by the East Lansing City Council, residents are required to remove snow before midnight if it accumulated before noon on the same day. Any snow that falls after noon has to be cleared by midnight the next day

Businesses or residences who fail to follow the law face a $25 fine for their first offense, with fines of $75 and $125 following for the second and any additional offenses.

The ordinance keeps in place previous requirements calling for either the clearing of ice from sidewalks or the application of salt or sand to the area.
